FAITH. CLIMATE. ACTION. The theme, decarbonizing the energy system of today while accelerating the buildout of the energy system of tomorrow, COP28 is underway in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It has achieved a major feat by establishing the Faith Pavilion, making it the first U.N. climate change conference to prioritize the involvement of faith communities by providing them with a dedicated space. Despite previously being underestimated, these communities have played a significant role in more than 1.5 million global climate crisis initiatives. Thus, this occasion represents a compelling testimony to their valuable contributions.EECMY DASSC is actively involved in this important event, thanks to generous funding from Act CoS and the entrance badge of Packard Foundation. The EECMY DASSC is dedicated to addressing climate change through various initiatives. One of its main efforts is to reduce carbon emissions by promoting the use of fuel-efficient stoves, to which it has a patent right, and trying to engage in carbon trading. The commission is also committed to protecting limited forest areas in the country, restoring degraded land, and encouraging the use of wood-efficient adobe technologies in construction. These efforts contribute not only to responsible consumption practices but also to sequestering carbon in the atmosphere.To address climate change, efforts are being made to assist smallholder farmers by promoting sustainable agricultural methods and providing them with early maturing, moisture-stress-resistant crop varieties and soil moisture retention techniques. Additionally, initiatives are being undertaken to help diversify their income sources and encourage non-agricultural activities that have a positive impact on millions of lives.EECMY DASSC is actively advocating for climate justice, loss and damage, and climate financing at regional, national, and international levels. Our ability to engage in advocacy was granted by the revised civil society organizations’ law in Ethiopia. We are committed to being a voice for those who have contributed less to climate change but have had to bear its high impact. In pursuit of this goal, we are actively participating in various networks including the Act alliance. God commissions us to rule over the creation in a way that sustains, protects, and enhances His works so that all creation may fulfill the purposes God intended for it. We must manage the environment not simply for our benefit but for God's glory. That is why EECMY DASSC, as an integral part of its vision and mission, cares for nature and is provided with due attention. (EECMY – DASSC) finalized the four days Annual Planning Workshop, today Nov 30/2023.

The goal of Education, Child and Youth Program (ECYDP) is to contribute towards quality education, strengthening child protection and safeguarding, youth employment, and access to productive assets to foster productive and responsible citizens. Hence, it contributes to the global and national commitment to "education for all". The basic services provided for the target children and youth are food, shelter, safeguarding and protection, medical support,&nbsp;enabling education opportunities, education materials, psycho-social support, and basic life skill training for formal, non-formal (vocational), and special needs education. The program targets vulnerable and disadvantaged children to improve the well-being and productivity of children and youth through rehabilitation, protection, and provision of quality and inclusive education.&nbsp;The ECYDP has four main components: Child Development; Special Needs Education (SNE); Formal and Informal Education and Job Opportunity Creation. In the fiscal year 2022, the Commission has planned to implement 143 projects and achieved 141 and reached out to a total 186,484 (96,196 female) target community members with an annual budget of 623.47 million Birr.As depicted on diagram 5, child development projects addressed 70,646 (38,708 female) children with a total annual budget of 430. 86 million Birr, whereas Special Needs Education (SNE) reached 23,336 (11,480 female) children with a budget of 40.04 million Birr. Formal and Non-Formal Education addressed 87,522 (43,553 female) children and youth with a total budget of more than 38.15 million Birr; and Job Opportunity Creation component targeted 4,980 (2,455 female) youths with a total budget of 61.01 million Birr.&nbsp;

EECMY DASSC in its current SP considered Education, Child and Youth Development, as one of its measure thematic focuses. Though EECMY is one of the pioneer organizations in modern education in Ethiopia and has been working on children and education for the last several decades, the “youth” didn’t get much attention as it should be. Consequently, in the current SP 2022/26, children, youths and education were given due attention and that is well reflected in the reporting year as well.

Education, Child and Youth Development Program (ECYDP)

EECMY DASSC has been working on women's empowerment for over three decades, and it has been one of the cross-cutting issues since the last strategic plan. Contrary to its being a long-term focus of the Commission, the achievement so far is not satisfactory.&nbsp;To address this challenge, WEIDP is considered one of the thematic focuses of the Commission for the five years of the SP. Having an overall goal of contributing to women’s and girls’ rights and gender equality in political, economic, social, and cultural life among the communities, the program mainly focuses on women empowerment, gender development,&nbsp;advocacy&nbsp;and persons with special needs (PSN) as its components

To improve the livelihoods of the vulnerable women and girls affected by abject poverty, EECMY DASSC put great effort into its SP (2022/26) and considered WEIDP as one of its Program pillars. The program has an overall goal of contributing towards improved women’s and girls’ participation in political, economic, social, and cultural affairs and ensuring gender equality among the communities (Goal IV of the SP2022/26).  The WEIDP consists of four main program components: women’s empowerment, advocacy, people with specific needs (PSN) and advocacy.  Besides, according to the SP (2022/26) gender crosscuts all interventions of the Commission.

4- Women Empowerment and Inclusive Development (WEIDP)

As stipulated in the SP (22/26), the Goal of the HPP program is: “to increase impact to save lives, alleviate human suffering, uphold dignity, peacebuilding and strengthen the well-being, confidence, and resilience of crisis-affected target communities”<a href="about:blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">[1]</a>.EECMY DASSC is aware of the increasing complexity of the crisis requiring coherence and complementarity across the humanitarian, development, peacebuilding, and security nexus. In the reporting period, EECMY DASSC has been actively engaged in humanitarian response and peacebuilding activities. HPP has four main components, namely Emergency Response, Rehabilitation, Peacebuilding and Refugee/migration and Human Trafficking. Under these components, HPP planned to implement five projects and implemented 37 projects in the reporting year The current situation in Ethiopia, widespread conflict and volatile security, and humanitarian crises demand humanitarian response and that necessitates the consideration of HRPP as one of the program pillars. The general objective of HRPP is to Contribute to the overall effort to save lives, alleviate suffering, uphold dignity, and strengthen the well-being and resilience of crisis-affected communities. The pilar aspires to and strives for the achievement of Humanitarian response based on humanitarian principles and attain sustainable positive peace and work towards seeing a world free from violence. Proven quality standards will be ensured, Humanitarian, Development, Peacebuilding (H-D-P) triple nexus approaches, Evidence-Based, integrated timely responses are the quality of the program’s implementation. The program mainly targets internally displaced people (IDPs), Refugees, ready-to-migrate ate youth and returnees.

In the last SP 2017/21, the interventions under livelihood development and health and nutrition programs were restructured as RBP in the current SP. Following the recent years natural and human-induced crises in Ethiopia, the vulnerability of the community, particularly the poor smallholders, is significantly increased. In addition to focusing on enhancing their livelihoods, considering the shock-absorbing capacity of the community significantly reduces their vulnerability to hazards. Having an overall goal of contributing to the long-term livelihood and health security of the target community and reducing their vulnerability to shock and stress, RBP is one of the Program Priorities of EECMY DASSC. The program mainly focuses on enhancing the capacity of the target community in areas of sustainable agriculture, diversifying household incomes, climate change adaptation and mitigation, care for the environment, awareness raising on preventive health and increasing the health-seeking behavior of the community.
